Techno / electronica producer Pascal Terstappen presents his fourth longplayer as Applescal, entitled ‘For’. The 10-tracker will release May 18th via Atomnation.
If you’ve been following this producer’s output over the fast few years, you’re likely to be aware of his meticulously built tracks and remixes, in which playfully experimental percussion structures and otherworldly melodies fuse into compositions that float somewhere between late-night headphone moments and the dancefloor.
On ‘For’, the new album, the Haarlem-born, Amsterdam-based producer takes things to the next level across a collage of vivid audible explorations that are without doubt, among his best work to date. ‘For’s’ content still conveys the organic and buoyant sound that we’ve become accustom to hearing when listening to Applescal’s earlier transmissions, but this time round, things seem to be delving into deeper and darker sonic terrains, resulting in what can only be described as a downright overwhelming listening experience.
Those familiar with the producer’s turnout will recognize Applescal’s signature touches on tracks such as ‘Like You Do’, ‘Matter’ and ‘Overseas’, with dreamscape synthesizers and sparkling grooves being the main ingredients. ‘For’ also sees the producer drawing from a new sonic palette, an even more mature one perhaps, bravely redefining his sound while staying true to the firmly-planted roots of his earlier musical harvests. Prime examples of his lust for musical experiments can be found in the gritty electro cut ‘Moabit’, the intense and moody ‘Japanese Bubbles’ and the downtempo ‘Where Are You’, all of which are tracks that showcase Applescal’s contemplative side in the most impressive of ways.
