Podwójny album live Dark Magus został nagrany 30 marca 1974 roku w Carnegie Hall w Nowym Jorku. Do grupy Davisa w tym czasie należeli basista Michael Henderson, perkusista Al Foster, perkusista James Mtume, saksofonista Dave Liebman oraz gitarzyści Pete Cosey i Reggie Lucas. Dark Magus został wyprodukowany przez Teo Macero i zawiera cztery dwuczęściowe nagrania zatytułowane od nazwa cyfr od 1 do 4 w języku suahili.

Dark Magus został wydany po przejściu na emeryturę Davisa w 1975 roku. Po wydaniu nagrań na żywo Agharta (1975) i Pangea (1976), Dark Magus został pierwotnie wydany tylko w Japonii.

Album zainspirował artystów funk z lat osiemdziesiątych. W przeglądach retrospektywnych krytycy chwalili jego estetykę jazz-rockową i występy członków grupy. W 2001 r. Magazyn Q nazwał Dark Magus jednym z 50 najlepszych albumów wszechczasów.
