Pianista Dave Brubeck, urodzony w 1920 roku, jest amerykańską legendą jazzu. Na początku lat 50. założył Dave Brubeck Quartet w Kalifornii, z którym wkrótce stał się wewnętrznym czubkiem sceny jazzowej Sunshine State. W 1961 roku Brubeckowi udało się dotrzeć na górne rubieże list przebojów z Take Five, utworem skomponowanym przez jego saksofonistę. Piosenka, zagrana w 5/4 czasu, była pierwszą jazzową płytą, która sprzedała ponad milion płyt. Take Five wywodzi się z płyty Time Out, która ukazała się w 1959 roku i z którą Brubeck zaprezentował jeden z definitywnych kamieni milowych jazzu.
