Jako studenci Antioch College w Ohio Idris Ackamoor (saksofon altowy), Margaux Simmons (flet) i Kimathi Asante (bas) stworzyli w latach 1972-1976 trzy trwałe muzyczne pomniki - "Lalibela", "King Of Kings", i "Birth / Speed / Merging", wszystkie wyprodukowane bez wsparcia wytwórni i bez dystrybucji.

Debiutancki album The Pyramids został zainspirowany wizytą grupy w klasztorze Lalibela w Egipcie, a nagrany w Yellow Springs Ohio na początku 1973 roku. Czerpiąc z nauk Cecila Taylora i wpływów Johna Coltrane'a, w połączeniu z zaporą intensywnej perkusji, album ewoluuje na przestrzeni kilku długich utworów.
