Vanguard is an exhibition exploring the instrumental role of Bristol’s creatives in the development of British Street Art, from the 1980s to the present day.
The seminal works, notable moments, key events and extraordinary artists belonging to Bristol’s dynamic history are highlighted in this comprehensive and compelling exhibition, which examines the creative response of the city’s pioneering underground scene throughout the UK’s turbulent social and political history and considers the drive for social change underpinning the work of many of today’s street artists
Vanguard The Album has been carefully curated and compiled by Bristolian DJ/Producer Boca 45 working alongside long term friend Dave Smeaton, the LP moves through the development of the tough beats and treats of the Bristol Sound and more. The compilation also contains a continuous mix of all of the tracks which will be played at the exhibition as well as 2 brand new tracks / soundscapes composed by Boca 45. Tracks are courtesy of Purple Penguin to early tracks by Smith & Mighty through Mo Wax pioneers like RPM to Aspects’ West Country hip hop and the explosion of Massive Attack. The album also includes an exclusive re-release of Any Love, the first single released by Massive Attack in 1988 with cover artwork by Robert Del Naja (aka 3D)
Throughout the evolution of the street art, musicians and streets artists have found inspiration in each other’s work, frequently collaborating on album covers and posters.
Vanguard The Album pays homage to this relationship, compiling tracks from some of Bristol’s most legendary crews which featured original artwork by some of the biggest names in street art. Cover art collaborations from the 80's on the album include original artwork by key figures in the Bristol street art scene such as Banksy, Inkie, Dicy, Will Barras, Azlan and Nick Walker.
The double vinyl record features extensive sleeve notes written by Bristolian Hombre Records label boss and curator Jamie Hombre reflecting on the groundbreaking cover art collaborations between street artists and musicians.
Hombre notes, “… Bristol is a city that breathes in and breathes out culture. Few can question the ways in which it has had, and continues to have, influence on those living elsewhere. But the large majority of art, and music, was and still is, “made in the West”… Bristol’s street art may well derive from the city’s historic association to cut and paste sampling and hip hop (as informed by West Indian carnival culture system culture) but time makes evident that those settling in the city can assert real influence too, and are enabled to do so by the cultural interplay and open atmosphere that is Bristol, resulting first in ripples, then full scale waves of industrialising and innovative output. From one vanguard to the next.”
